It looks like Google has placed further commitment to its online app store business, as it has just officially announced the Google Apps Marketplace. This is targeted at customers who are currently using the Google Apps service, and the apps featured in the Google Apps Marketplace will be able to integrate well it, making things less disjointed within companies. Installed apps, with administrator approval, will be able to interact with calendar, email, documents and contact data, providing a productivity boost. Another benefit of this centralized system is that users won’t have to remember passwords for various accounts, nor worry about the hassle of syncing and sharing data. Currently there are already more than 50 companies selling applications in the Google Apps Marketplace. It looks like we’ve taken one more small step into the world of cloud computing. Video after the jump.

The Google Apps Marketplace is meant to be the go-to place for everything from accounting and finance products to Google Analytics add-ons, all designed, packaged, and sold by third-party companies not associated with Google directly, but wishing to complement the company’s Google Apps suite. Like any proper app store, each product has its own dedicated page in the Marketplace, complete with full product description, vendor information, pricing details, and recent customer reviews.

Google Apps Marketplace replaces the older Google Solutions Marketplace, a similar store for products that complement Google’s own offerings.

Final Fantasy 13 is here! And what a wait it’s been. Since Final Fantasy 7 brought the traditional Japanese RPG to a mainstream audience way back in 1997 Square Enix’s long-running series has been one of video gaming’s most profitable and beloved franchises. It’s also remained resolutely loyal to Sony, with each major episode being exclusive to PlayStation hardware. How does Final Fantasy 13 extend that legacy? Read our Final Fantasy 13 review and we’ll break it down for you.

The adventure begins in the floating city of Cocoon, where humans are protected by a mysterious race called the fal’Cie. A rogue fal’Cie from Pulse, the world underneath Cocoon, breaks loose, and some humans are branded as l’Cie, servants of the aliens. They’re targeted for elimination by Cocoon’s government, but several escape and set out on a mission to rescue a friend.

There are six primary characters, and they are some of the most irritating people ever to appear in a game. There’s surly soldier Lightning, cocky stud Snow, whiny orphan Hope and spacey chatterbox Vanille — no one you’d want to have lunch with, much less spend the dozens of hours it takes to complete “XIII.” I did grow to like Sazh, who comes off at first as a Chris Tucker impersonator but turns out to be the one sensible guy in the gang, and late arrival Fang delivers some much needed sex appeal.

“Final Fantasy XIII” does pick up steam about two-thirds of the way through, as the characters’ stories coalesce and the action branches out beyond the straight-ahead path. Unfortunately, I suspect many players — especially series newbies — will lose patience long before then. Two stars out of four.

Google Maps is set to provide a new option for getting around town: biking directions.

And it will be Great news for bikers: the nerds at Google have added bicycling directions to Google Maps. It appears right alongside the other options, walking, car or public transit. It doesn’t work everywhere yet – I tried to find a way from my apartment to the local bike-polo court and Google Maps just told me it couldn’t calculate a route.

The company plans to unveil what it called “the most requested addition to Google Maps” during the National Bike Summit in Washington, D.C. Google Maps users looking for directions between two points will now have the option of selecting “bicycling” from the current drop-down menu that lets you customize a journey with walking, driving, or public transportation options.

Anyone who has ever tried to bike across San Francisco knows the value of a good bike map in helping to avoid 200-foot hills and city streets that behave more like freeways. Google Maps users have created their own bike maps for cities like New York and Minneapolis, but Google itself hadn’t taken that step until now.

The service is, of course, in beta, and Google is soliciting feedback on the suitability of roads for biking. You can of course still do it the old-fashioned (and somewhat quicker) way: use the walking directions, which ignore road-rules and one-way streets.

Just occasionally, a bit of gear comes out that makes you wonder just whose side technology is on. And none more than this cell-phone idea from the R&D geeks at KDDI Corporation, one of Japan’s biggest cell-phone makers. Spyware by any other name, the technology will enable bosses to use the accelerometer on their employees’ phones to check up on whether they’re working or not.

The idea is simple: software is embedded into an employee’s mobile that is connected to a server that analyzes their movements via the phone’s accelerometer. At first, workers will have to input just what action they are performing into their mobiles so that their movements can be interpreted. The system becomes more accurate as time goes on, recognizing each individual’s movements. So, if your boss has asked you to hoover up the nasal hair he clipped before nipping off to lunch with his secretary, he can make sure that you’re performing the task he’s set you, rather than sitting in front of his computer and checking up on your Facebook page–or his.
