The Debian GNU / Linux project this morning announced it had released version 6.0, known as Squeeze. Debian spokesman Alexander Reichle-Schmehl said the release came a week short of two years of development. The latest stable release, Lenny, was held on February 14, 2009.

Debian GNU / kFreeBSD port both 32 – and 64-bit PC version of the FreeBSD kernel in Debian user space, becoming the first release of Debian Linux without a kernel. The Debian Project is serious about the sample label technology, however, these versions of FreeBSD based have limited advanced desktop.

Within either Linux or FreeBSD, Debian 6.0 includes the usual range of desktop environments: KDE Plasma, GNOME, Xfce and LXDE desktop environment will all be on board. Tighten introduces a dependency-based startup, so the system boot faster and more robust due to parallel execution of startup scripts and correct dependency tracking including Reichle-Schmehl said. “Several other changes make Debian more appropriate for small portable form factor, as the introduction of the KDE Plasma Netbook shell.” The new packages available with Sueeze include the browser chrome, Icing monitoring solution, the software package management interface of the Centre, wicd network manager, tools LXC Linux container and corosync cluster framework. In total, over 10,000 new packages are included.

“These ports are the first to be included in a version of Debian that are not based on the Linux kernel,” said Reichle-Schmehl. “The support of common server software combines the features strong and current versions of Debian-based Linux with unique properties known in the BSD world, however, in this version the new ports are limited;. For example, some advanced desktop features are not yet supported. ”

There are many goodies in 6.0 Debian GNU / Linux, not least of which is again completely free as in freedom kernel of Linux, which no longer contains firmware modules that Debian developers are upset. According to the statement of Debian, the installation images can be downloaded right now via bittorrent (the recommended way), jigdo or HTTP, see Debian on CD for more information. Soon be available in physical DVD, CD-ROM and Blu-ray of numerous vendors, too.

Another important aspect is the removal of stains from firmware problems – which were non-free code. All have been removed, restoring the purity of the Debian distribution. You can re-enable non-free repository – belonging to a distribution like Debian.

Debian runs on anything (Intel IA-32 (i386), Intel EM64T/x86-64 (amd64), Motorola/IBM PowerPC (powerpc), Sun/Oracle SPARC (sparc), MIPS (mips (big-endian) and mipsel (little-endian)), Intel Itanium (ia64), IBM S/390 (s390), and ARM EABI (armel)), and you can obviously upgrade your existing installation painlessly.

The first finished version of OpenOffice.org spin-off, LibreOffice, has come to the Web version 3.3. Has some unique features, a look ever so slightly modified, and the ability to export to Microsoft’s docx format by default. Today, the Foundation has announced that its first stable version, LibreOffice 3.3, is ready for download.

Among the many changes you will find in version 3.3 are the arrival of new import filters and improvements to existing ones – the main characteristics when you are trying to convince users to migrate to compete suites like Microsoft Office, Works or WordPerfect. Calc (spreadsheet application LibreOffice) now has improved Excel interoperability, SVG images can be opened and modified in Draw, and can also be imported into Writer.

LibreOffice has won the support of allies for a long time open source and Red Hat, Novell, and Ubuntu. But it has plenty of rivals, while the Foundation paper focuses on the separation of its roots Oracle and Sun, the biggest rival is still Microsoft Office and new challenges arise as products of cloud computing and Google Docs.

As you would expect from a news point, new features LibreOffice 3.3 are modest in scope. These include the ability to import SVG graphics file, a console for creating presentations, and Microsoft Works import filter. In addition, the software includes features for the next set OpenOffice 3.3, such as a spreadsheet limit of one million rows and a print dialog box designed to be easy to use.

PowerPoint alternative Suite – Presenter – now comes with a slideshow mode plug-in that makes controlling your laptop a breeze. Testers enjoyed the addition of experimental mode, which can activate if you would like to play with new features before it has officially been added to LibreOffice. Windows, Mac and Linux distros such as Ubuntu, Fedora, Suse, Mandriva and Debian.

The news for which all the fans of Firefox are waiting that Mozilla has released the 7th Beta version of the upcoming Firefox 4b browser and the incredibly interesting thing is that this latest Beta release comes with a new, faster JavaScript engine. Instead of the TraceMonkey JavaScript engine, Firefox 4 Beta 7 uses the JägerMonkey JavaScript engine.

“JägerMonkey is an invisible but powerful addition to Firefox 4 Beta,” explained Vice President of Products with Mozilla, Jay Sullivan. “The Firefox SpiderMonkey JavaScript engine now incorporates the new JägerMonkey JIT compiler, which, along with enhancements to the existing TraceMonkey JIT and SpiderMonkey’s interpreter, adds up to speeds that really show off today’s rich Web apps. You’ll notice this in faster start-up time, improved page-load speed and the performance of Web apps and games.”

Mozilla has improved the browser’s core features even more with HTML5 support. Firefox 4 beta 7 adds new HTML5 form API which makes details HTML5 form creation much easier and quicker, as well as graphics performance, 3D capability with WebGL, and boost in JavaScript. Mozilla first released Firefox 4 beta back in July

The new Mozilla Firefox 4 beta 7 browser also enables developers to render 3D graphics with WebGL — without any external plugins. Mozilla also stated that support for a wide range of graphics cards and GPUs will come soon, to further boost 3D graphics within Firefox 4 beta 7. The browser adds hardware-accelerated graphics for Windows XP and Mac OS X operating system as well.

You have to be willing to wait until the 2011 though. Firefox Director Mike Beltzner announced that Firefox 4 RC will be released at the beginning of 2011. “Our estimate is now that release candidate builds will ship in early 2011, with a final release date close behind,” said Beltzner.

We can only imagine how good the final version of Firefox 4 will be. Let’s see

The folks behind Kubuntu Linux have decided to drop the separate Netbook Edition dubbed as Kubuntu Netbook 10.04.1.

The update doesn’t add any major new features, but it does contain every bug fix released since Kubuntu Netbook 10.04 was launched in April. In other words, if you’re already running Kubuntu 10.04 and you’ve been installing updates as they come in, there’s nothing here for you. But if you want to install Kubuntu Netbook Edition from scratch, you can save a lot of time by grabbing the 10.04.1 disc image instead of the older build.

You can get Kubuntu 10.04.1 from the Kubuntu download page. Just make sure to hit the Netbook CD 32bit link if you’re looking for the Netbook Edition.

Good news for users of Debian-based Linux distributions out there. Google has finally updated their web based talk service to support voice and video chat on Linux.

Visit www.gmail.com/videochat to download the plugin and get started.

The plugin is only available for Debian-based distros and only in binary form. Getting it is straightforward, just download the .deb package and install it with your manager of choice.

Google says an RPM package for Red Hat-based distros is on its way, but you can probably use one of the many package converters out there in the meantime.

It took Google almost two years to develop and release the Linux capability; the company unveiled video chat for Windows and Macintosh in November 2008. Now Linux users can video chat directly from Gmail, iGoogle, and Orkut, according to Google.

Google Talk mobile also is available for an array of smartphones, including the Palm Pre, Blackberry, iPhone, and Android. Google continues to fine-tune its communications tools. In June, the company simplified its video chat feature by adding easy-to-find icons to initiate video, voice, or group chats.

The plugin is all the more important since Google has big plans for Voice and wants to launch a full-blown VoIP service with soft phone built into Gmail. The Linux version of the plugin may end up in the upcoming Google Chrome OS, which is based on the Linux kernel and some libraries, though Google may opt for a purely web-based approach.

Firefox fans have reason to celebrate, the first beta of the upcoming Firefox 4 is here and there’s plenty to like. Firefox 4 Beta 1 is just the first step, of many, towards the final release. Firefox explorer, considered to be the largest rival of Microsoft Windows’ Internet Explorer, has upgraded to its newest version with multiple technologies in line with future Internet developing trend.

With Firefox 4 Beta, Mozilla introduces a brand new interface. It takes cues from Google Chrome and other browsers by placing the tabs on top by default (in Windows only; it’ll come to Mac OS and Linux later on), and hiding the menubar (instead, a new Firefox button provides access to commonly used commands). Firefox 4 Beta also features bolstered HTML5 support, adds full WebGL support for 3D rendering within the browser (though it’s disabled by default at this time), and adds support for Google’s new WebM video format.

Mozilla provides its Firefox users with versions used in operation system including Microsoft Windows, Apple’s Mac and the Linux OS. The newly released beta version of Firefox is expected to widely compete with IE as the most popular Internet browser in the scientific arena.

OPEN SOURCE software developer Canonical is preparing a version of the Ubuntu Linux operating system for tablet computers.

Canonical is hoping to step up its presence in the mobile space, but it might find itself having a tough time against other open source offerings like Google’s Android and Chrome. It might also encounter tough competition from Palm’s WebOS and Apple’s Iphone OS.

The tablet-specific version will be built about v10.10, which is currently code-named Maverick Meerkat in keeping with tradition. There are also plans to merge the tablet and netbook OS into a single Ubuntu Light, which certainly makes a lot of sense given the move to touch even in the netbook space. It’ll be interesting to see how this shakes out; Microsoft seems content with using a full version of Windows 7 even on tablets, while some consumers may prefer a more stripped-down experience.

As Kenyon explains it, the OS will be a slimmed down version of Ubuntu 10.10 with a simplified, touch-friend user interface.Canonical is currently in talks with tablet makers and component manufactures to make the OS run faster while consuming less power. If all goes to plan, expect to see Ubuntu-based tablets start to materialize in the first quarter of 2011.

Canonical has now unveiled two new major additions to its Ubuntu Family. They were just unveiled a new lightweight user interface shall called Unity that maximizes screen while consuming fewer system resources… perfect for the low-power, small display notebooks.

Unity won’t just be for netbooks though. It’ll be the default interface for Ubuntu’s instant-on variation, Ubuntu Light. Instant-on operating systems are meant to boot in mere seconds, and are alternative operating systems for use when all you need to do is quickly check your email or look at a webpage.
