When it comes to our Google searches we want results and we want them fast. If you are not sure what I am talking about then you are going to get a laugh. Someone came up with an idea to sort of defend Google. Everyone, including myself is always fussing and moaning about what Google does or doesn’t do. Sloppy Google is supposed to show you just how horrible things could be.
An MFA at Pasadena’s Art Center College of Design, created a “Sloppy Google” that shows what Google would be like it were a sloppy, lazy and rude person. The project, which is a mash-up of html5 canvas, javascript, processing.js, jQuery, Google Search API, according to the site’s about page, aims to help people reimagine how the web could work.
Enter search queries and it will yawn. Hit ‘I’m Feeling Lucky’ and you’ll be out of luck. Even the search results you do get will be not quite what you wanted. To appreciate the beauty of Google — and maybe to show your kids what life with a less powerful and lazy version of the behemoth — send them over to Sloppy Google. See if they don’t want to tear their hair out. Alexis Tsotsis writes that Sloppy Google is as lazy and incompetent has a human (hey! That hurts.) Writing for Tech Crunch, he describes the lackadaisical version as “a reminder that for all its foibles, Google is still way better at its job then we are, never sleeping, making careless mistakes or being half-assed (unless you include Adsense).”
Sloppy Google is intended to show people how Google would run if it was run by humans. I did a few different searches in the search engine to see what would come up. I searched for Joe and it mistook my type and put Jeo and pulled up a bunch of junk. This surely is sloppy Google.
“What if searching – the everyday digital routine of our lives is somehow different? What if Google is represented by humanistic operators who type in keywords and submit search request for you? In contrary to auto correct your spelling, it messes up your search results by misspelling your keywords; it yawns at your face just like a careless customer service agent would have done to you,” the project creator said. “Having a lazy Google is surprisingly comforting to some! Machine isn’t perfect, it makes mistakes, and it needs rest just like everyone of us.”
