Rival to Verizon – AT&T Cuts Price of iPhone 3GS to $49

ATT iPhone 3GS Price Cut

AT & T is lowering the price of Apple’s 3G iPhone in half, offering $ 49 devices, below $ 99 for users with contracts, Bloomberg News reports. According to the article, the price cut comes into effect today, January 07. However, when TVWeek went to the Apple online store today (07 January), the 3G is still offered for $ 99.

Verizon Wireless, a venture of Verizon Communications and Vodafone Group Plc, which are larger rivals AT & T plans to begin selling an iPhone version soon. However, AT & T said the price of the iPhone 3G in Apple stores will be determined by Apple itself.

The price cut follows AT & T announced on Wednesday at the Consumer Electronics Show that it plans to sell 20 new high-speed wireless smartphones in 2011 to reduce its dependence on Apple.

Falling prices for iPhone3GS comes as AT & T says it plans to introduce 20 new devices this year for its fastest mobile network next generation. The price cut on the iPhone will help make way for the new line later this year, the story notes. AT & T also wants to keep customers is expected to lose its position as the only retailer of iPhones in the U.S.
