Since the Xbox 360 just received a massive refresh with the addition of Kinect. There are still 3 years of life left in this console, but it appears that rumors about the next-generation device, Xbox 720 will be released in 2011/2012.
Some rumors says that Microsoft being unhappy with Intel and Nvidia, which may have also been the reasoning why the Xbox 360 uses the IBM Xenon CPU in the Xbox 360 and an R600 graphics chip from ATI (AMD). Could the next Xbox use an AMD chip? Absolutely. Will it be an AMD chip? We believe that this is too early to call as Microsoft won’t rely just on relationships alone. The Xbox is big business and Microsoft will need the best product. If it gets it from AMD, it will be an AMD chip. If it will be Intel, it will be Intel.
Peter Moore, the head of Microsoft’s Interactive Entertainment Business Division, has claimed that the company is looking into the new model. Research is being carried out to determine what type of consoles will be available in 2011/2012. However, the company still plans to sell the Xbox 360 for a while before the new console is introduced.
There were some heated debates between Microsoft and nVidia during the project. Probably the most famous is when, near the end of the project, Microsoft asked for the list of issues raised and fixed with the hardware and nVidia refused to release it, reportedly saying that it was ‘nVidia’s intellectual property and not to be shared with outsiders’. Microsoft not only had issues with Intel it also butted heads with nVidia – near the end of the project Microsoft asked nVidia for a list of issues raised and fixed with the hardware. nVidia refused – reportedly saying it was ‘nVidia’s intellectual property and not to be shared with outsiders’.
The current consoles run on an R600 derivative from ATI called the Xenos with performance close to a Radeon HD 1900 but with DX10 features from the R600. But according to rumours, the next-gen Xbox will be based on technology from AMD, based on production at Globalfoundaries on its 28nm ‘high-k gate first’ process. It should manage 1080p at 60fps locked, or more, with 3D capable at the same frame rate. So in other words it will be an AMD Fusion II.
