Regional wireless provider U.S. Cellular has announced three new prepaid calling plans just in time for the holiday buying season,  each of which includes unlimited text messaging. Talk time on the three plans is 200, 400 or 1000 minutes for $29, $39 or $49 respectively. The 400 minute plan includes 5GB of monthly data.

Company VP of marketing and sales, Edward Perez, said, “We always want to delight our customers, and these plans are designed to meet their specific needs. They will also enjoy other great perks like unlimited text, picture and video messaging and our free Battery Swap Program.”

“With balancing the budget on the minds of many, prepaid plans can help customers stay on top of spending and don’t require a contractual agreement,” quips the press release.

The Essential Plus Family Plan comes with two lines for $139.99 per month with 1500 shared minutes, unlimited messaging and 5GB of data per line, and the Premium Plus Family Plan offers two lines with unlimited minutes and messaging, 5GB of data per line, Phone Replacement and GPS navigation for $179.99 per month.

While I agree that prepaid is the way to go, and it’s great that companies like US Cellular are coming up with more than one option to cater to different needs, there is something here that doesn’t add up for me. It appears far more expensive to take the family plan just for the sake of getting 5 GB of data/line. If I look at the competitors in prepaid, Net10 offers not only unlimited text, but unlimited talk, picture messaging, web access and 411 for $50, meaning you could have 3 family members on unlimited everything plans for $10 more than 2 lines of limited minutes and data with US Cellular. For me, cost is the deciding factor, with the fact that Net10 has great coverage just being an added benefit.
