Zombies are the best antagonists since Nazis went out of fashion. They’re the kind of bullet fodder that even the most just and noble hero doesn’t mind slaying indiscriminately. Whether the walking dead are stumbling around in books, movies, or video games, people just can’t get enough of them. Even on your iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch, you can enjoy massacring zombies in a variety of gory and creative ways. Here’s a look at the top zombie games for iPhone, iPad & iPod Touch.
Call of Duty: World at War – Zombies: The iPhone’s first official CoD game is all about zombie-whompin’! This first-person gore-fest comes straight from the eponymous console game mode, and even supports up to four co-op players via Wi-Fi or the Internet. There’s only one map to start, but Activision promises to release more. Price: $9.99.
Zombieville USA, Mika Mobile: Now here’s a game with zombies in it – the gore, barricading yourself in houses, a redneck with a shotgun… it’s got everything. Well, that’s about it, really, but everything that zombie-based entertainment needs. Taking a casual stroll in this 2D side-scrolling gorefest is as simple as it is amusing. The living dead leap from the ground right under your feet, and it takes a quick trigger finger to dispatch them with just your pistol. But ducking into the houses on the street furnishes you with cash and weaponry, and once you break out the shotguns and uzis the flesh eaters don’t stand a chance.
Alive 4-Ever: The $2.99 price tag on this one is a little higher than the slew of lame zombie shooters on iTunes, and that’s because this one really stands out. It is a top-down shooter where you run around with a variety of weapons and turn hordes of zombies into bloody piles of meat and bone. This is one of the most downloaded and highest rated zombie games on iTunes and is hugely popular. Over a thousand people have rated it five stars. If you can handle all the blood and gore, you definitely want to check out this intense shooting game.
Zombie Highway: When we first reviewed this game, we found it to be one of the better zombie app games in the App Store. Its endless-runner action fed that “one more time” feeling that great games have, while its dynamic recreation of a classic zombie movie moment — the desperate race to get away from the unead — hit all the right notes. And since our initial review, Zombie Highway has gotten even better, adding more levels, more weapons, AND the ability to run down zombies with your SUV. It’s an excellent app that any zombie lover should experience.
Resident Evil 4, Capcom: A new gaming platform has arrived only when it gets its first quality Resident Evil adaptation. Although it wasn’t the first T-Virus outbreak on the iPhone, this streamlined conversion of the console classic retells Leon’s gory excursion into the darkest corner of eastern Europe in top notch, 3D style. It wouldn’t be fair to say that corners had been cut, but clever shortcuts are being used to compact the levels and storyline into a fully featured yet condensed zombie hunting game. Fans of the series might balk at the notion of this finest addition to the franchise being slimmed down, but it’s a fair trade-off against shoehorning console-quality zombie slaying action into a handheld platform.
