Following a premature reveal on Electronic Arts’ online store, Mass Effect 3 was officially unveiled via a brief trailer. “Two million dead in the first day, another 7 million by the end of the first week,” said the voiceover, which sounded much like British actor Sean Bean. On screen, a sole sniper is seen bearing down on a target–the same sniper that had been seen in leaked screenshots from developer BioWare.
Set to take place on Earth, the game will see players traveling the universe attempting to rally the races of Citadel Space to take the human homeworld back and defeat the Reapers and their Collector army once and for all. The trailer alluded to rumors of a new multiplayer element for the series, which will likely take place amidst the human resistance’s battle with the Collector invasion force.
The blurb about Shepard coming to save the Earth from invasion was also confirmed, as the trailer showed a nameless soldier holding out against enemy forces while waiting for the famous Commander to arrive. The new trailer didn’t drop any word on whether the game would include multiplayer, so we’ll have to wait to see if Mass Effect fans will take up arms against each other.
The screen then showed that Mass Effect would have a release date of holiday 2011, right alongside the Elder Scrolls V. Though no platforms were mentioned, the EA Store leak had the game as being released for the PC, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360.
