The big question rolling across the Internet today is “Is Facebook down today?” The answer is, “it was,” when they rolled out, and rolled back, some new features. Many of Facebook’s more than 550 million members found they could no longer log on to the social networking website for approximately 30 minutes earlier today starting at about 4:15 p.m. ET due to a leak of internal prototypes to the public, which caused the company to take the site down for a short time.
Facebook opted to take a little time and turn off the social networking site so they could do some updates to their interface. But also they had to do some damage control, they said “For a brief period of time, some internal prototypes were made public to a number of people externally,” a Facebook rep told Forbes. “As a result, we took the site down for a few minutes. It’s back up, and we apologize for the inconvenience.”. Facebook, for its part, blamed on radical black update of the page. “Within a short period of time, some internal prototypes were unveiled to the number of people, apparently, a representative of, said Forbes magazine this morning. “As a result, we took the site down for several minutes. He’s back, and we apologize for the inconvenience.”
Some Facebook users took to Twitter to discuss the down time, one of them read: “Facebook is down. Half the world population had suddenly become productive. The other half of the population is using “Twitter.”. “For a brief period of time, some internal prototypes were made public to a number of people externally,” a Facebook spokesperson told Forbes magazine earlier today.
The key flaw that caused this outage to be so severe was an unfortunate handling of an error condition. An automated system for verifying configuration values ended up causing much more damage than it fixed. The intent of the automated system is to check for configuration values that are invalid in the cache and replace them with updated values from the persistent store. This works well for a transient problem with the cache, but it doesn’t work when the persistent store is invalid.
For a brief period of time, some internal prototypes were made public to a number of people externally. As a result, then the site down for a few minutes. It’s back up, and we apologize for the inconvenience. The so-called Facebook panic occurs when the social networking site goes down, for any appreciable length of time. The Web then becomes flooded with searches like “what’s wrong with Facebook,” “is Facebook down” “Facebook not working”, “is facebook down today”, “facebook down december 16″, “why isnt facebook working right now”, “facebook login problems” and so forth. The same sort of panic occurs when Twitter goes down.
