Although the Android 2.2 Froyo software update for Dell Streak devices on AT&T’s network was said a few days ago to be already rolling out to users, it seems that it was actually delayed to the first quarter of the next year.
some operators are still unable to keep up with the promises and can’t deliver in time. This is also the case with the AT&T SIM-locked version of the Dell Streak, which, according to an email supposedly from Dell to AT&T, should receive the OTA Froyo update sometime in the week of January 12th.
The email, which also stated that owners of the unlocked devices should have already received a notification for upgrade and if not, the OTA update should be found in the settings menu, was just confirmed by Dell. The actual confirmation did not come with an explicit date, but merely a suggestion that Dell is working with AT&T to push the update through, and that customers should begin receiving the Android 2.2 Froyo update for their SIM-locked AT&T Dell Streaks sometime next mont
Moreover, it appears that those who purchased the device as soon as Dell placed it on its website actually received the Streak with Android 1.6 on board, and that they had to update manually to Android 2.2.
They were able to upgrade to 2.2 through Menu -> About phone -> System updates with no problem, but you can bet that many of them were very upset when they powered on their new Streaks for the first time and saw Android 1.6 staring back at them.
All in all, it seems that Dell did not manage to meet the deadline on this one, and that it had to push back both the availability of unlocked Android 2.2 Froyo-based Streaks, as well as that of a software update for the AT&T-locked devices.
