Nintendo announced that during Thanksgiving/Black Friday week, they sold 1.5 million combined DS and Wii systems( 900,000 DS systems and 600,000 Wii systems).
According to USA Today, that’s an increase for the Wii over last year, when it sold 550,000 systems. But the DS dropped down from sales of over one million last year, perhaps because the launch of the 3DS is just a few months away. . Those one-week numbers are a lot more than Nintendo sold in the whole month of October, according to sales data from market researcher NPD. But Nintendo did not say whether those numbers beat last year’s Black Friday week. In general, sales of the Wii and the DS have been much weaker than a year ago, as both systems have begun to show their age.
Nintendo claims that the new DS and Wii colors were a determining factor for many consumers that purchased new systems. The new colors (which were part of various system and game bundles) included the limited-edition red Nintendo DSi XL (bundled with Mario Kart DS), Orange and green Nintendo DSi systems (bundled with Mario Party DS), and the limited-edition Mario red Wii hardware (bundled with a red Wii Remote Plus controller, a red Nunchuk controller, New Super Mario Bros. Wii, and Wii Sports).
Reggie Fils-Aime, president of the Nintendo of America, said that Nintendo sold about 9,000 hardware systems for every hour during every day of Black Friday week. The Wii has had a relatively weak title line-up this fall, particularly since Nintendo delayed a new Zelda game for the Wii. But other big titles include Wii Party, Kirby’s Epic Yarn, FlingSmash, GoldenEye 007, and Disney Epic Mickey.
If you missed out on the Black Friday shopping last week, you can still get some great deals on electronics such as the Nintendo Wii or the DS. Many retailers are offering deals similar to Black Friday during their cyber Monday sales.
