Microsoft finally announced the xBox Kinect, which is a motion based gaming addition that can be installed into any existing xBox console. Kinect for Xbox 360 is now available in North America. Kinect, originally known as Project Natal is a contoller-free gaming for the Xbox 360 video game platform by Microsoft. Kinect brings a new way to play the games and may later be supported by computers via Micrsoft Windows 9.
The Kinect system can be purchased for $150 through many different retailers. While availability of games will be limited at first, hundreds of games are planned to utilize the Kinect system. This will include strategy based games, sports games, and even games that are used to stay active and physically fit. The Kinect for Xbox 360 consoles enables the users to control the Xbox 360 in new ways-no controller required using gestures, presented images or object and spoken commands through a natural user interface. Kinect will compete with PlayStation Move for PlayStation 3 and Wii Remote with Wii MotionPlus for Nintendo Wii.
With the Kinect sensor, you can experience gaming like never before. Easy to use and fun for everyone, the Kinect sensor utilizes revolutionary full-body tracking to put you in the center of the fun. This amazing new technology allows the sensor to recognize your body and mirror your movements in the game, making you the controller. The sensor is compatible with every Xbox 360 and comes with the game Kinect Adventures!
The device requiring at least 190MB of available storage space. Games that can oly be played in Xbox 360 with Kinect feature a purple case and a wave next to the green waves with a word Kinect on top. The device sensor contains an RGB camera and a depth sensor to capture your movement. Kinect allows users to control Xbox 360 console using voice commands with built-in multiarray microphone to track the voice.
Over at CVG, Tim Ingham says he is “completely charmed by Microsoft’s oblong oddity.” The Kinect, he gushes, “is an absolute pleasure to have in the home. Much more importantly, it’s a reliable one. Within an hour of messing about with the Kinect Dashboard, any nagging question marks over lag and unresponsiveness are snuffed out. Your on-screen hand icon matches your real-life movements near-perfectly, whilst the voice commands…. are an absolute revelation.” Similarly, Gieson Cacho, of the Contra Costa Times, had trouble making enough room to really get things going. Kinect players, Cacho writes, “will have to rearrange their living room to properly use the sensor. Having a heavy coffee table won’t help because the Kinect needs six to 10 feet of open space in front of it most of the time.”
