YouTube’s “Yankeyan” is back with another Kinect hack that’s even better than his last. While he previously showed off that Kinect could be used to wield artificial lightsabers, now he’s crossed first-party barriers and made the Microsoft motion gaming device into a working controller for Super Mario Bros.
In this video Yankeyan has it hacked the Kinect to work with his PC, and then running a NES emulator he is able to get it to control Super Mario Brothers 3. You can see him on the screen making the motions, as well as being reflected in a mirror, so you know he’s really doing it. The only negative we’ll say, and it has nothing to do with his hacking skills, is that it is obvious the Kinect is having trouble with finer motions. The reaction time to his jumps is not perfect, and that’s making things like getting the growth mushroom a bit labor intensive.
Yankeyan programmed this with OpenKinect drivers and Nintendo emulation, so that Kinect recognized his motions and virtual button presses onto the emulator. “I could have placed a simulated keypad right in front of me that I can press with my hands, but I thought full body gestures were more in the spirit of Kinect,” he writes. “Of course, Mario isn’t designed to be played like this, so this is really really hard.”. That looks like more of a workout than Your Shape Fitness. Great. This guy probably just gave Shigeru Miyamoto an idea for the next Mario game.
