Blizzard’s upcoming PC game Diablo III appears to be headed to consoles, if recent job postings by the company are accurate. According to the company’s Jobs Directory, Blizzard is currently looking to fill lead designer, lead programmer, and senior producer roles very specifically for a console version of Diablo III.
Recently Blizzard added three new positions to their list of jobs/careers, all of which are for their Diablo III team, the positions include console Lead Designer, console Senior Producer and console Lead Programmer. A console port has never been denied, though this is the first confirmation we’ve heard of it existing. Judging by the senior roles that are being filled, it would appear that the port is in the very early stages of development.
The developer has stressed “that this is not an announcement of a console title” but they want to explore the possibility of bringing a Diablo-like game to consoles. So while Blizzard doesn’t want people to shout “Diablo III is coming to consoles!” just yet, that may be a reality sometime in the near future. This is a pretty shocking move, as we haven’t seen a Diablo game on consoles since the original was ported to the PlayStation, and that was more than a year after its initial release.
Blizzard has issued an official statement on its Battle.net forums, clarifying that “this is not an announcement of a console title,” and that the team is “currently exploring a Diablo-related concept for consoles.”
The full statement follows: “As some of you may have seen over on the Diablo III home page, we’re currently exploring a Diablo-related concept for consoles. As we’ve said in the past, with proper care the gameplay could suit the console platform, and we’re interested in seeing what talent out there might be interested in contributing to such a project. To further reiterate what’s posted on the home page: this is not an announcement of a console title. We are first and foremost developing Diablo III for Windows and Mac PCs, and we have no intention of allowing a console interpretation to delay or otherwise affect the release of the game. As always feel free to discuss this topic here, but please note that we don’t have any further details to share at this time.
