Acer has unveiled a new “concept device”, the new dual-screen laptop has two 14in displays, including one in place of a traditional keyboard. The Iconia, which was unveiled at a press conference in New York, features two touch-screens protected by ultra-tough Gorilla Glass.
The Iconia has two 1366×768 capacitive touchscreens, one in the usual place and one where the keyboard would be. The idea being that it vastly increases the stuff that you can do. Of course, you can only look in one direction at once, and the bezels nix any ideas you might have of folding this thing into one big screen. The guts are respectable, but nothing crazy: Core i5, integrated graphics, 4GB of DDR3, a 2.5″ HDD, 3G, and a USB 3.0 port. That all could change, since this isn’t a final spec device. The Courier concept was radically different from all the touchscreen tablets that we’ve seen so far. It was designed with a journal-type interface, enabling you to organise dynamically-updating web clippings, images, notes and other content in a way that was designed to make your life a lot easier to organise.
The Iconia comes with a 44WH, 4-cell battery that amounts to about 3 hours of life, according to Acer. It’s also not lightweight, weighing in at 6.18 pounds. As for hardware specs the Acer Iconia looks to be tricked out for a full media experience. Its base configuration includes 2.93GHz (Tubo Boosted) Intel Core i5-480M processor, 4GB of DDR3 memory, Intel HD integrated graphics, 320GB of hard drive space (up to 750GB), and 802.11 b/g/n Wi-Fi. Acer said the Iconia, which runs Microsoft’s Windows 7 operating system, would introduce “a brand new tablet experience”. “This level of commitment to touch technology is something no other PC vendor can compete with,” said Jim Wong, president of Acer.
The Iconia, which goes on sale in the UK on Jan 8, will cost £1,499. The device uses Intel Core i5 processors, and a minimum of 4GB memory and up to 750GB hard drive.
