As the fourth season comes to an end, Mad Men is really hitting its stride. The multi-Emmy juggernaut has shown no signs of slowing down. Season Four kicked-off with a simple theme: New Beginnings. A new agency, a new life for Don Draper, and a new life for the supporting characters.
Much of the season has focused on the newly formed Sterling, Cooper, Draper and Pryce agency. It focused on its growth, and its struggles. We’ve also seen the growth and struggles on Don Draper as a single man, and father. But with the season finale days away, I would argue that the key of this final episode is not Don. It won’t be the agency, or Peggy, or Joan. No, the key of this season finale is in the hands of a tortured 10-year-old. Of course I’m talking about Sally Draper.
During last week’s episode of “Mad Men” the camera delivered a wonderful shot of Don, Faye and Megan in the offices of Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce standing far apart from one another in a perfectly composed triangle. On Sunday night during the season finale, one side of that triangle was eliminated as Don axed the mature, reflective Dr. Miller in favor of his beautiful, young secretary.
Before we unpack what this all says about the fate of women in 1965 – and the show said a lot of it for us, perhaps too explicitly – let us take a moment to absorb the impulsiveness of Don’s decision. Needing childcare for his trip to California, in the wake of Betty’s abrupt firing of Carla for displaying characteristic sanity, Don gets Megan to join him on the West Coast to watch after Sally, Bobby and Gene. As we will recall, Megan had already shown Don, and us, what a wonderful mother she’d make when Sally ran away to Don’s office and fell down.
So, what are your predictions for the opening circumstances of season five? What did you think of the relatively mellow season finale and this transformative season as a whole? Having dispatched of idealistic President Kennedy and the last vestiges of the supercivilized, seemingly archaic 1950s, we’ve finally entered the “real” ‘60s, and like the spaceships of Tomorrowland, Mad Men’s late 1960s adventures are sure to be a wild ride.
