Trey Songz – Passion, Pain & Pleasure Album Released – Review

Trey Songz Passion Pain Pleasure

Trey Songz’s fourth album, Passion, Pain and Pleasure, is now available in stores. The disc is a quick follow-up to his third offering, Ready, which hit stores in August 2009.

Enter Trey Songz… the non-dancing, cornrowed crooner who was left with very little spotlight. He had an array of singles that barely cracked the Billboard charts. Yet slowly but surely since his 2005 debut, Trey Songz has grown to arguably become the King of R&B. Through a slew of freestyles, a mixtape, signature phrases, a departure from braids and an addition of muscle, Trey Songz redefined himself as a sex symbol with the release of his last album, “Ready.”

But “Passion” is softer and subtler than “Ready.” There are more ballads here – and fewer “panty-droppers” and “baby-makers.” Instead, Trey is making “Love Faces” at his girl, or growing reflective, and occasionally maudlin, as on “Can’t Be Friends.” Though his near-yodel has slowed, it has hardly disappeared. “Pain (Interlude)” is practically a paean to “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” – this is highly unlikely loverman music. But when Trey does indulge his libertine desires and penchant for puttin’ on a show, as on the gleeful, kinetic “Bottoms Up,” he is trumped by an even more eccentric performer.

Producers on the project include Troy Taylor, Brian-Michael Cox, Stargate and Mario Winans. This is by far the strongest portion of the CD. He shows his audience that he is heads, shoulders, knees and toes above his male counterparts vocally. This, coupled with great song writing, will leave the heartbroken with a nice set of songs to get over exes. The songs are very reminiscent of an older classic R&B with real instruments and soulful singing.
