Google is celebrating 25th anniversary of buckyball as Google Doodle, you can see that on Google’s homepage. Today on 4th of September Google is observing the 25th birthday of buckyball and the Google ‘O’ is converted into a yellow buckyball. Not only is the buckyball a good desk top but it is also an entertaining one since it can be moved by the mouse.
Buckyballs, also called Fullerenes, are carbon molecules arranged in a spherical shape with geometric patterns similar to those found on soccer balls. They are named after architect Buckminster Fuller and his geodesic dome designs (think the giant golf ball at Epcot in Orlando, FL). Buckyballs and quantum dots are two nanotools useful in medicine. A bucky- ball is a soccer ball-shaped molecule that’s 1 nanometer wide. The Doctors could use buckyballs and quantum dots in gene therapy to send genes into human cells.
Google Doodle might be keeping its trend of commemorating various events in its own way, but a layman is likely to be oblivious of buckyball and its presence on the Google homepage.
