A report spread through the internet that two moons will appear at the night sky all over the states tonight(August 27) is a big hoax. The e-mail mentioned that tonight(August 27) at exactly 8:00 PM Eastern Time, the moon will rise from the east with the red planet on its side. The e-mail stressed that Mars will be too close to the earth that it will shine just like the moon but we all know that this is impossible.
Apparently, the rumors begin about a rare occurrence of two moons that will appear in the sky and will be visible to our eyes. It was reported also that the second moon which is actually be the planet Mars and on its rare occasion, the two moons will appear at the same time.
However, this email is a hoax and has continued to circulate each August since it was formulated. The original email dates back to 2003, when Mars passed the closest the earth has ever seen it in 60,000 years.
If Mars will be this close to Earth, the two planets will definitely attract each other and would no longer be separated or it could be even worst. It is inevitable that a similar impact which created our own moon could happen if Mars will be this close to earth just like what had happen some 4.5 billion years years ago.
As NASA confirmed over their announcement through this hoax that Mars has a distance of 78 million km and it will be impossible for it to be comparable in size to our moon relative to earth. They specifically explain that the moon is just merely 378,000 kms away from the earth. Furthermore, two moons appearing at the same time happens only once every 1,00 years and is only scheduled to reappear until 2287, thus proving this news as a purely hoax.
The email seems to re-circulate every time there is a Mars opposition, like there was in January of this year. It also comes around again every August, which seems to be a popular month for the Mars hoax to resurface.
