Pandora Radio Brings ‘Genre’ Option to Create Station : Pandora, the leading personalized radio service, today announced that listeners now have more ways than ever to kick-off their personalized listening experience on Pandora with a new option to create radio stations by selecting a musical genre.
Until today, Pandora has been all about music discovery, creating meticulously curated stations around certain musicians, songs and composers. Now users have the option of listening to everything from genre stations like “Today’s Hits” and “Today’s Country” (which are some of the most popular stations already) to micro-stations like “Christmas Blues” and “Today’s College Indie.” There are more than 100 micro-stations in all.
Senior Music Curator Michael Zapruder said, “Our listeners have been telling us for a while that they’d like an easy way to start a station from popular genres with the option to personalize the station from there. We wanted to find a uniquely Pandora way to address this consumer need so we created a number of genre stations that are carefully seeded with relevant songs and constantly refreshed with new releases.”
With this move, Pandora joins the ranks of the majority of music discovery services and Internet radio sites, which already offer the “Genre” option — including Last.fm, YouTube Music and Songza.
More than 100 other micro-genre stations have also been created for listeners who are looking for a different type of station creation option, including: Alternative, Blues, Christian, Classical, Country, Easy Listening, Electronic, Family, Folk, Holiday, Indie, Jazz, Latin, New Age, and World. The full list can be viewed by clicking the ‘Genre stations’ button on the Pandora homepage, a link on the ‘Create a New Station’ panel.
