HTC Droid Incredible Froyo Android 2.2 Update Available from August 18

The Froyo update will be available for Droid Incredible owners on Wednesday, August 18, according to Mashable’s unnamed sources. Verizon Wireless team members are reportedly using the new version of Android on their phones already.

We’ve heard from our sources that the Verizon team members already have Froyo installed on their Droid Incredibles. Now the update is essentially ready for primetime. Froyo has been making its way onto some of the most popular Android handsets in recent weeks. The HTC Evo 4G, the Motorola Droid and the Nexus One have the updated OS.

Android 2.2 is arguably the most substantial upgrade yet for Google’s mobile operating system. In addition to supporting Flash 10.1 and faster processing speeds, Froyo delivers Wi-Fi hotspot capabilities, new voice commands and “Chrome to Phone” syncing.

The Droid Incredible currently uses the Android 2.1 operating system but although a jump to 2.2 looks pretty small, it is actually a major upgrade.  The main features that Droid Incredible owners will start to enjoy include the addition of 3G Mobile Hotspots which allow your phone’s 3G connection to be used as a wireless link to any other wireless enabled devices in it’s vicinity. Froyo also includes support for Adobe Flash 10.1 meaning you can now play feature rich flash games and also watch videos from websites such as Youtube without the need for the dedicated YouTube player if you prefer. Perhaps the biggest enhancement to Froyo is the speed increase in which operations are performed.  Google boast that this increase could be anywhere between 2 and 5 times faster than in previous Android versions.  This statement has been backed up by benchmarking software on phones already upgraded to Froyo.

Flash 10.1 support is enabled in Froyo, though the feature carries with it the capacity to jump one’s phone up into heavy heats and shorter battery life due to the required processing power. Another significant improvement comes from Android’s mobile browser, which has been kicked up a notch using the V8 Javascript Engine to make for faster page loads. Performance increases to the OS, as a whole, are reflected by a increase of five times the score on the Linpack benchmark versus Android 2.1.
