Bina48 is an interactive robotic head whose appearance and personality are based on those of a real woman, Bina Rothblatt. The bot was wrought by android wizard David Hanson of Hanson Robotics, known for its Einstein android. It contains 30 servomotors covered by rubber skin.
Modeled after a real Bina, this robot head spent hours talking to the real Bina in question so as to learn a wide variety of expressions and gestures. The end result was a robot that can actually speak and act a lot like a human does, complete with strange vocabulary and realistic expressions.
Bina48 isn’t the first android to be based on a real woman, the Actroid and Geminoid projects in Japan are based on real people as well. But Bina48′s aim of recreating someone’s appearance, personality, and memories is provocative.
