Canonical Unveils Ubuntu Light for OEMs and Unity for Netbooks

Canonical has now unveiled two new major additions to its Ubuntu Family. They were just unveiled a new lightweight user interface shall called Unity that maximizes screen while consuming fewer system resources… perfect for the low-power, small display notebooks.

Unity won’t just be for netbooks though. It’ll be the default interface for Ubuntu’s instant-on variation, Ubuntu Light. Instant-on operating systems are meant to boot in mere seconds, and are alternative operating systems for use when all you need to do is quickly check your email or look at a webpage. Unity’s low resource footprint makes it a perfect interface for a slimmed down operating system.

Unity and Ubuntu Light promise access to the web in seven seconds, according to Canonical.

While Unity is available now, the next move is to make it the basis for Ubuntu 10.10 Netbook Edition, ahead of its update in October 2010.
