Oscar 2010 Tech Awards Predictions

Visual effects, costumes, sets, makeup, etc. have always been a distinguished part of cinematic history, and their fields deserve proper recognition. Here is a prediction Oscar 2010: Tech Awards done by Grant McGuire.

Lets check out the Predictons by categories,

BEST CINEMATOGRAPHY:

All good nominees in this field, from fantasy to realism, yet “Avatar” should score a homerun here. Quite simply, the 3-D camera work was breathtaking, and it had a most distinctive stamp, looking like nothing else in cinematic history. “The Hurt Locker” could win too, but I think Cameron’s film has more punch with it’s camera work.

BEST ART DIRECTION:

Looking over past winners in this category, Oscar voters habitually favor past recreations over futuristic/fantastical visions. More to the point, they love period European cities. Neither “Nine” or “The Young Victoria” have much steam, so I think “Sherlock Holmes” will take this category for it’s depiction of 1890s London.

BEST COSTUME DESIGN:

In most years, this categoy is easy: when in doubt, go with the period drama. But with three period dramas nominated this year, it’s tough. Yet between the three, I’d have to pick “Coco Before Chanel;” in that film the costumes literally are the subject of the picture. Plus they ignored “The Devil Wears Prada” in 2006 to go with “Marie Antoinette,” so this will be their atonement.

BEST MAKEUP:

A contest between two films no one saw, and one film everyone saw. Many people felt “Star Trek” was shut out of more prominent categories, so this is where it will earn a consolation prize for the great makeup on Eric Bana and Leanord Nimoy. The film will easily top “The Young Victoria” and “Il Divo.”

BEST FILM EDITING:

“Avatar,” don’t you think? “The Hurt Locker” and “Inglourious Basterds” have great editing, but “Avatar” had the most seamless and zippiest. James Cameron’s editing team flawlessly created a new world that seemed, in a way, real a plausible. That alone is no easy accomplishment for any movie.

BEST SOUND EDITING:

I’m no expert, but from what I understand, sound editing is about precision of specific sounds. Here, “The Hurt Locker” should take home the gold, for it’s much prasised realistic depiction of life in war-torn Iraq. It’s an area where the film could have been murder on the ears, instead it’s flawlessy precise.

BEST SOUND MIXING:

Mixing is how all the smaller sound effects come together as a whole. “Avatar” should take this one for it’s astonishingly original Pandora sound menagerie. We’ve never heard most of those sounds before, and they were wildly original and inventive. Oscar voters will not be able to resist.

BEST VISUAL EFFECTS:

Why don’t they just mail this award to “Avatar”‘s special effects team? “District 9″ and “Star Trek” are good, but “Avatar” was groundbreaking; creating the first convincing and well-used 3-D effects. Add in the brilliant motion-capture technology, and we have a surefire winner. This is a tough award to get wrong, and voters will be right once again.
